The minimal set of components required to establish a computing system is denominated a Microcomputer. The basic structural description of an embedded system introduced in Chap. This chapter discusses the basic hardware and software elements required to establish a computer system and how they interact to provide the operation of a stored program computer.

Programming provides us with the flexibility to use the same hardware core for different applications. A device whose performance can be modified through some sort of instructions is called a programmable or configurable device. In this chapter we present the basics of how to use C language to program embedded systems. Be aware that this is not a self-contained chapter in this topic or a substitute for a textbook on the subject. Being this an introductory chapter and limited in scope we are obliged to left aside several topics, among them for example programming for real time systems, a topic which would need a chapter by itself.

Before a microcontroller can be put to work, the fundamental components that enable its functionality must be in place. These components are what we call the basic MCU interface. The first part of this chapter deals with the discussion of how to provide the fundamental requirements of power, clocking, reset, and bootstrapping needed to enable the functionality of any MCU.

MSP devices have different levels of support for their basic interface. The supports level changes depend on the specific generation and family.

In this chapter we discuss how these requirements are satisfied across all device generations. This chapter immerses readers into the array of peripherals typically found in a microcontroller, while also discussing the concepts that allow understanding how to use them in any microprocessor-based system. The chapter begins by discussing how to use interrupts and timers in microcontrollers as support peripherals for other devices.

These are the two most important support peripherals in any microcontroller as they form the basis for real-time, reactive operation of embedded applications.

Diverse forms of serial communication formats and protocols can be found in applications ranging from short inter- and intra-chip interconnections, to the long range communication with distant spaceships traveling to other planets.
